Homestyler: A Fun, Free Design Tool

May 16, 2014 § Leave a comment

I may be late to the game with this but I recently discovered Autodesk Homestyler, a great site that allows you to create design layouts and plans in 2D and 3D. I was trying to decide if I should learn how to use AutoCAD, which is a design tool professional designers use (fashion, interior design, architects, etc.), but I realized while that would be awesome to add to my resume I really just wanted a fun tool to play and design with! Homestyler is from the same company that produces AutoCAD but its target user is everyday people like you and me which means it’s a lot easier and helps you visualize what you want your room to look like super fast!

Once you sign up, you can create a user profile and share your designs with other users. They can “heart” your design (kind of like Instagram) and leave comments, too.

You can create a new design from scratch and use real measurements to get the specifications correct (wondering if that couch will fit in your living room?) and you can choose products to place in your room from their huge catalog with brands like Room & Board and Crate & Barrel. The only issue I see so far is that I can’t randomly select an image/product off the internet and include it and it doesn’t have everything from Crate & Barrel, etc. so the options are slightly limited. However for a free tool I think it’s pretty awesome!

Getting Started

I started re-creating my living room but I really won’t be able to play with this software until this weekend. I’m working on redecorating my bathroom and I’m thinking about making some changes in my living room. This tool will be so helpful rather than moving all of my furniture and breaking my back! If you sign up let me know–we can share designs (my username is afreshcoat btw)! I hope you enjoyed this post and as always, thanks for stopping by! XOXO Jen

Getting Crafty at West Elm Georgetown!

November 15, 2013 § 2 Comments

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!

Last night I went to the West Elm store in Georgetown to attend their holiday wreath event. Meg, their super awesome and crafty store manager led the event and greeted everyone as we walked in the door. The tables were set up with all the supplies we needed and we had our very own instructor who showed us how to make the wreaths.

First, we outlined the black paper banner with chalk and wrote our holiday message in the middle (we were all really indecisive and probably pondered our message for like 20 minutes, then practiced our handwriting on the paper place mats on the table lol). Then we placed the banner in the wire wreath frame and started pulling apart branches to add to our wreaths. The staff at West Elm was really helpful and at one point their GM came over and started cutting wires for our table because he could see we needed a little assistance! In order to secure the branches, we wrapped green pieces of craft wire around them and to the base. At first this seemed super easy but after about 40 minutes everyone at our table started getting a little tired and dropped our perfectionist ways to get the job done! I will say the Christmas music helped everyone stay in the mood. It was fun meeting the girls at the table and everyone was sharing holiday memories which was nice. Everyone did such a great job and after about an hour we all finished. Some of the girls purchased accessories to add to their wreaths like little bottle brush animal ornaments or red or white garland.

All of the wreaths came out beautiful and now I’m looking forward to my next crafty project! A little hint that Meg shared with us: this may become a monthly thing at their store and maybe, just maybe, in December they will have an event that involves making candle holders out of cinnamon sticks.
What kinds of crafts are you making for the holidays? Are there any DIY’s you’re interested in learning? I want to start posting some more items like this so let me know what you think. As always, thanks for stopping by and reading A Fresh Coat. XOXO Jen

P.S. Look for me on your fav social media sites @afreshcoat.

Spotted this little setup and fell in love with the Parsons clock with bone inlay in the herringbone pattern, $99

Our craft table

I love non-traditional trees! Look at those butterflies! Pretty!

Hello, new favorite coffee table! The rustic wood is gorgeous! (Emmerson table, $499)

Another glimpse of our craftiness in progress!

My next project is definitely going to be a DIY on those burlap trees! They are so easy to make and come out super cute!

The whole store was decorated for the holidays and a good amount of people came to partake in the festivities! Christmas music was a plus!

My friend Lia was loving these bottles!

All the wire cutting was making me think about the movie Baby Jane and the line that says “No more wire hangers!” lol

I was making progress!

Had such a fun time with these girls and their wreaths all came out great! From the left: Kim, Chrissy, Alisa, and Lia

The finished product!

I hung up my wreath as soon as I got home!

I literally threw out my Zombie Obama pumpkin on Sunday…but now I’m already signing up for Christmas DIY events in the city! I think maybe we forgot about Thanksgiving? OK, I definitely didn’t and will be sure to post about that holiday but I wanted to give you all a heads up on this event I found today from West Elm created by Erin from House of Earnest. She has a really great blog filled with fun DIY projects you should go check out immediately! I’m hoping this event proves to be exciting and that it will get me in the holiday spirit (although I must admit I am already there! I bought my first Christmas present Sunday online!). If you’re interested in going you can sign up on their facebook page here.

As always, thanks for stopping by and have a great day! XOXO Jen

OPI Fall Manicure!

October 23, 2013 § Leave a comment

Ever since I got that set of 10 nail polishes from e.l.f a few weeks ago, I’ve been slightly obsessed with painting  my nails! Last night I decided to do a gray color with one slightly blinged out nail. I used OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and a gold specks top coat from Ulta Beauty (love that store, btw, and hate that the closest one to me is in Silver Spring because it feels so far!). Hope you like the nails and thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! XOXO 20131023-132218.jpg

Bling on the Gold! Nail Polish I Love Right Now!

September 28, 2013 § 3 Comments

I was reading Real Simple a few months back and came across a feature that had the most amazing nails I have ever seen (see bottom picture). The only problem is that with my job, those nails would call too much attention to my hands so I came up with a slightly less flashy version (by day I am a technical writer for a government contractor here in DC)! I grabbed this pack of 10 mini nail polishes from e.l.f. for $9.99 a few weeks ago and was so excited to see the Nude and Gold Star colors because I knew I could create a fun look inspired from the Real Simple shoot! What do you guys think? I’m also pretty excited to try out some of the other colors in the pack–I’m feeling green this season! I’ll paint my nails that color on a non-meeting day ha!
As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! XOXO Also, if you’re on Facebook come over and say hello!

ACE Hardware Ladies Night in DC-Tonight!

February 5, 2013 § Leave a comment

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a really cool event with you lovely ladies out there: tonight, ACE Hardware on 5th St. is hosting their 3rd Annual Ladies night from 6-8pm. Drinks, treats (Baked by Yael) discounts and demos are the theme of the evening. Product vendors and local businesses will be there to perform demos, workshops and hand out freebies (we ALL love a freebie!) for guests. Some of the workshops include sink maintenance and repair (um, yes please. I’ve been blow drying my hair over my bathroom sink for years and I know there has to be a way to get out that gross hairball!), bicycle repair and carpet and upholstery cleaning. The first 100 ladies get a complimentary gift bag and everyone gets 20% off the entire store. Be sure to buy a raffle ticket as well–you could win a gift card to a local restaurant/store and the proceeds all go to local charities in DC. It is going to be a great night to mingle and learn something new about home repair! I’ll be there too, so if you happen to make it out say hello! As always, thanks for reading and have a great day! XOXO
