LUSH: Memorial Day Shopping!

May 27, 2014 § Leave a comment

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day! I enjoyed my three-day weekend and had a nice mix of work and play! Saturday I went to a winery with a friend, Sunday I did sound and lighting for a wedding in Old Town, Alexandria, and yesterday I wandered around Georgetown and did some shopping. I went into LUSH because I was in desperate need of a good, refreshing shower gel and an amazing foot scrub–daily sandal appearances and the DC humidity make these two additions a complete necessity at this time of year! I also like shopping at LUSH because they use natural ingredients, make everything by hand and do not test on animals.

Picture 1The first product I settled on after playing with a ton of items in the store (so much fun!) was their dirty springwash shower gel ($9.95-$28.95). It’s a mixture of spearmint, menthol, glycerin and sea salt and has a tingling, cooling property and leaves your skin really soft. Essentially, it is amazingly refreshing! Yeah, it’s technically for guys but girls use it, too and the scent isn’t so strong that when you get out of the shower you still smell like mint. Plus, my signature scent (Victoria’s Secret Vanilla Lace) always overpowers any lingering shower gel scent! I bought the small bottle to make sure I liked it once I got home but I will definitely return to get a larger bottle soon!

The next product I had to get was the stepping stone ($4.50). I’ve purchased this in the past and I completely forgot how much I love it! First of all, it smells soooooooo good and has hints of lemon and lime plus a mixture of pumice stone, sea salt and a deodorizing foot powder called lycopodium. All you need to do is break off a small piece (it crumbles easily) and mix it with water in your hand then apply it to your feet–they will come out smooth and smelling great!

As always, thanks for stopping by! BTW, come say hi on Pinterest, FacebookTwitter, and Instagram @afreshcoat! XOXO Jen

Party Ready Nails!

I’m still on my emerald green kick and recently a good friend gifted me a sparkly polish (because she is awesome and knows me so well!). Sally Hansen’s Triple Shine in Seanic 350 is a great color and was perfect for my first holiday party of the season! You have to put on about three coats to get a full-on glitter effect but it looks great once you do! You can also use it as an accent color if you’re not as into the sparkle as I am. Major bonus is that there’s really no need for a base or top coat since it’s basically clear polish with glitter-so time-wise, it really takes just as long as your everyday manicure. The only down side is when you want to remove it! Be ready to file off the top layer of your nail if you’re impatient like me and don’t want to scrub it off for an hour (it’s worth it though, promise)! I knew I was going to wear a black dress so the bright nails popped!
Hope you are all enjoying your holiday season and thanks for stopping by! XOXO Jen

OPI Fall Manicure!

October 23, 2013 § Leave a comment

Ever since I got that set of 10 nail polishes from e.l.f a few weeks ago, I’ve been slightly obsessed with painting  my nails! Last night I decided to do a gray color with one slightly blinged out nail. I used OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and a gold specks top coat from Ulta Beauty (love that store, btw, and hate that the closest one to me is in Silver Spring because it feels so far!). Hope you like the nails and thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! XOXO 20131023-132218.jpg

Bling on the Gold! Nail Polish I Love Right Now!

September 28, 2013 § 3 Comments

I was reading Real Simple a few months back and came across a feature that had the most amazing nails I have ever seen (see bottom picture). The only problem is that with my job, those nails would call too much attention to my hands so I came up with a slightly less flashy version (by day I am a technical writer for a government contractor here in DC)! I grabbed this pack of 10 mini nail polishes from e.l.f. for $9.99 a few weeks ago and was so excited to see the Nude and Gold Star colors because I knew I could create a fun look inspired from the Real Simple shoot! What do you guys think? I’m also pretty excited to try out some of the other colors in the pack–I’m feeling green this season! I’ll paint my nails that color on a non-meeting day ha!
As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! XOXO Also, if you’re on Facebook come over and say hello!

HomeGoods and TJ Maxx Open in Georgetown Tomorrow! (*Plus a Giveaway*)

“Holy crap-this store is big!” was the first thing I thought when I rode the escalator down the stairs of the brand spankin’ new 50,000 square foot HomeGoods and TJ Maxx combo store in Georgetown (3222 M St NW ). The space is what used to be the really sad, often overlooked “mall” where the only place I ever seemed to visit was the DMV (I’m happy I’m a real Washingtonian now though!). The megastore opens tomorrow morning at 8am for its grand opening celebration and will close at 8pm; regular store hours will be M-Sat 9:30am-9:30pm and Sun 11am-8pm.

20130906-205732.jpgSo, what can you expect? Well, I’m not supposed to “name names” but the Runway section has some amazing deals on leather bags and I can tell you you won’t be disappointed with the variety of clothes either! The minute I stepped foot in the section–it’s a special little slice of heaven in the front of the store where you can find high fashion designs for women (sorry, guys!) at drastically reduced prices–my Fall shopper mode came into full effect. Some hot trends like leather accents mixed with tweed stood out to me and I can’t wait to go back tomorrow and shop!

20130906-205740.jpgBesides the Runway, the store has a wide variety of men’s, kids, home accents and even specialty food items (black quinoa stood out to me along with some yummy looking British teas). Their pillow section is about a mile long (again, heaven!) and the table linens I peeked at were amazing–great fall colors like burnt orange and teal with modern, Moroccan-inspired designs were some of my favs. They also have a great selection of handmade items from India and hand-painted glass from Italy.

Perfect Brows?!

February 7, 2013 § 1 Comment

Picture 12

OK, hold the phone–why did I not know about eyebrow stencils?! I admit that while I love makeup I guess I’ve been blessed (depends on how you look at it) with full eyebrows and I’ve never had to fill them in…my problem has been the opposite-wax, pluck, thread–you name it, I’ve done it! It wasn’t until this past summer when I had my makeup done for a wedding that I had my eyebrows “perfected” and it was instantly apparent to me that adding a little color to your brows really does make a difference! It pulled together my look and stood out in pictures in a good way (not in the way your grandma maybe draws them in…this was more of an enhancement…like a push-up bra). I’ve always been afraid to do it myself though because I don’t want to look like a clown but then I saw these Anastasia eyebrow stencils for $20 in a recent issue of Real Simple. I have always been jealous of women that have a perfect arch and these seem like an amazing, error-proof way to give it a go on my own. They are only $20 online so I think I am going to try them out!

Do any of you have some great eyebrow secrets to share with me? I’d love to hear what you use, if anything, on yours. Is this an acceptable everyday sort of thing or just on special occasions where you know your image will be snapped a lot? The jury is still out in my book because mostly I’m afraid of sweating off eyebrow powder at the gym but we’ll see how it goes!

Thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! See you soon! XOXO

Holiday Sales Are Here!

November 8, 2012 § Leave a comment

Hey everyone! If you haven’t noticed, it seems as though yesterday (or at least that’s when I was at the mall and noticed) was the official day the malls and shops everywhere broke out their holiday decorations and started playing Christmas music. Funny how it coincides with me thinking about what I want to get my friends and family for the holidays! I already have downloaded a Black Friday app on my iPhone and I’ve been getting updates as stores release their sales (I know, I’m nuts!). Here are a few sales going on now that I thought you might enjoy! As always, thanks for visiting A Fresh Coat!
