National Girl Scout Cookie Day!

Crumbs Bake Shop released a limited-edition Thin Mint cupcake today  in honor of National Girl Scout Cookie Day. This is fun news for those of us that love cupcakes and Girl Scout Cookies (everything in moderation, right?!)! You can grab one of these tasty treats (mint cream cheese frosting and a thin mint on top=yum) through February 22nd at your local shop or online. This could be a really fun treat for Valentine’s Day, too!

National Girl Scout Cookie Day brings attention to the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the largest girl-led business in the world, where girls learn five essential life skills: goal setting, money management, decision making, people skills and business ethics. I was a Girl Scout as a kid and I have to say, I was totally into being the #1 seller!

Picture 15If you can’t make it out to grab a cupcake or cookies and want to attempt to make your own Thin Mints at home, try this recipe from Yahoo Shine:

Homemade Thin Mint Cookies

(Adapted from Chef Chloe’s Vegan Thin Mints)
Makes 64 cookies

1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
½ cup cocoa powder
¼ t salt
¼ t baking soda
¾ cup butter or vegan margarine (the real thing contains no butter, so margarine—we like Earth Balance for its absence of hydrogenated oil—will taste more accurate)
3 T milk (any kind, dairy or non-)
1 t pure vanilla extract
½ t pure peppermint extract

Chocolate Coating
4 cups semisweet chocolate chips
2 T butter or vegan margarine
½ t peppermint extract

Cookie:
Use a food processor to blend dry ingredients, by pulsing. Add margarine, milk, vanilla, and mint extract and pulse until well combined. Scrape out dough, knead until all the ingredients are well incorporated, and chill in refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours, till mixture is firm.

Preheat the oven to 350° and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. When dough is ready, roll balls about as big as a heaping teaspoon, and press them, one by one, onto the baking trays, leaving about 3 inches of space around each. Flatten each to about a quarter inch thick and bake for 12-15 minutes. Roll a heaping teaspoon of cookie dough into a ball and place onto prepared baking sheets, leaving about 3 inches in between each ball. Cool on rack completely.

Chocolate coating:
Melt chocolate chips and margarine until smooth using a double boiler or microwave. Stir in the mint extract. Dip cooled cookies into the chocolate using your fingers or a fork. Arrange cookies plates lined with parchment paper and refrigerate until coating sets.

If you get to try any of these treats, let us know how you like them! As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! Hope you all have a great weekend! XOXO

Perfect Brows?!

OK, hold the phone–why did I not know about eyebrow stencils?! I admit that while I love makeup I guess I’ve been blessed (depends on how you look at it) with full eyebrows and I’ve never had to fill them in…my problem has been the opposite-wax, pluck, thread–you name it, I’ve done it! It wasn’t until this past summer when I had my makeup done for a wedding that I had my eyebrows “perfected” and it was instantly apparent to me that adding a little color to your brows really does make a difference! It pulled together my look and stood out in pictures in a good way (not in the way your grandma maybe draws them in…this was more of an enhancement…like a push-up bra). I’ve always been afraid to do it myself though because I don’t want to look like a clown but then I saw these Anastasia eyebrow stencils for $20 in a recent issue of Real Simple. I have always been jealous of women that have a perfect arch and these seem like an amazing, error-proof way to give it a go on my own. They are only $20 online so I think I am going to try them out!

Do any of you have some great eyebrow secrets to share with me? I’d love to hear what you use, if anything, on yours. Is this an acceptable everyday sort of thing or just on special occasions where you know your image will be snapped a lot? The jury is still out in my book because mostly I’m afraid of sweating off eyebrow powder at the gym but we’ll see how it goes!

Thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! See you soon! XOXO

Bling Out Your Bath!

I’m a big fan of all things sparkly and believe that a little bling goes a long way. The new “All That Glitters” bath accessory collection from Topex Hardware features Swarovski crystals and adds a chic element to the bathroom. The line includes towel bars, robe hooks, toilet paper holders, shelves, soap dishes and tumblers. I am really digging the bling and had to share these with you! Prices range from $89 for the soap dish to $485 for the 18-inch towel bar. As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat! XOXO

P.S. Stop by our Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest and say hi!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a really cool event with you lovely ladies out there: tonight, ACE Hardware on 5th St. is hosting their 3rd Annual Ladies night from 6-8pm. Drinks, treats (Baked by Yael) discounts and demos are the theme of the evening. Product vendors and local businesses will be there to perform demos, workshops and hand out freebies (we ALL love a freebie!) for guests. Some of the workshops include sink maintenance and repair (um, yes please. I’ve been blow drying my hair over my bathroom sink for years and I know there has to be a way to get out that gross hairball!), bicycle repair and carpet and upholstery cleaning. The first 100 ladies get a complimentary gift bag and everyone gets 20% off the entire store. Be sure to buy a raffle ticket as well–you could win a gift card to a local restaurant/store and the proceeds all go to local charities in DC. It is going to be a great night to mingle and learn something new about home repair! I’ll be there too, so if you happen to make it out say hello! As always, thanks for reading and have a great day! XOXO

Some of the featured vendors include: Urban ReferralsRa RoomsMythic Paint3MSodaStreamBicycle Space DC and more!
