Calendar Find!

November 30, 2011 § 1 Comment

Hello everyone–I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I had a fantastic time visiting my family in South Jersey and have been recovering from a cold and all of the good times while home. Today I just wanted to put up a quick post about some really cute (and free) printable calendars! Anything But Perfect is a fun little site by Angela,  a stay-at-home mom in Arizona, and she puts up a new calendar every month. The themes are always perfect for kids but I love them too because they are quirky, bright and have enough space to actually write activities in! If you get a chance, stop by and check them out! Below is the December calendar and I hope you like it as much as I do!

As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat and please stop back in soon! XOXO

Nuts for Acorns! Handmade Finds for Your Thanksgiving Table & Decor!

November 23, 2011 § 1 Comment

OK, I realize that hed is cheesy but as I was walking home the other day I stepped on an acorn and it was like I stepped back into my childhood. Growing up in the Pinelands of New Jersey I was surrounded by acorns, pine cones and trees as far as the eye could see–I had a “forest” in my backyard for goodness sake! Now, I prefer cement and less bugs to too many trees but I appreciate the time I spent in nature as a child and I love heading home (most of the time!) for the holidays.

Crunching that acorn beneath my feet made me think of home and that if I were hosting my own Thanksgiving this year, I’d love to bring some natural elements–like acorns–into my decorating theme. I wanted to share some of my favorites with you today.

The first thing I found were these beautiful handmade Acorn Cap Floating Candles by Worleys on Etsy, 10 for $10. They would look gorgeous as a centerpiece or maybe floating around on top of a fireplace mantel.

Better Homes & Gardens had a wonderful DIY idea–use acorns and leaves to make beautiful pictures/picture-frames. They are uber-Thanksgiving and would be a great craft to do with kids!

Another cute DIY is this cozy knit napkin ring! I found the How-To online at Knitting Paradise that has the pattern and instructions. I’m not so much a fan of the green acorn but you can change that if you make them! If you have a kitschy style, these would be a great addition to a mismatch of funky decor.

What would Thanksgiving be without wine?! OK, truth-be-told, my family doesn’t drink at all so these  darling wine charms from Fairyfolk would never be on my mom’s table but they sure would be on mine! The set of 6 includes felt and wood acorns, each a different color so your guests will be able to recognize their drink no matter where they set it down ($20 for the set). I just LOVE these!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and I especially hope that if you are traveling on this wonderful Thanksgiving Eve that you stay safe! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit A Fresh Coat and I hope you come back again soon! If you get a minute, please head on over to our Facebook page and give us a “Like.” Thanks again and I’ll see you all soon! XOXO

DIY Wishbone Napkin Charms

November 20, 2011 § Leave a comment

Recently, I re-subscribed to Martha Stewart Living after taking a break from having too many magazine subscriptions. Apparently, after two years of sobriety I’m back on the wagon and now have a slew of reading material coming in on a monthly and weekly basis! I can’t lie, getting a magazine in the mail is one of the most wonderful experiences for me. I can see it right away because its big dog-eared corners are usually sticking out of the mailbox (thanks, Mr. Mailman) and I know it’s going to bring me joy, rather than the trauma that my student loan bill brings (haha).

OK, now that my soliloquy on magazines is over I wanted to share this fantastic idea that was in the November issue of MSL: DIY wishbone napkin charms. Martha (/her staff) got them from an online store called Delightful Heart, however her coverage of them must have caused the big “sell-out” to happen:

I would recommend going to any craft store and looking in their scrapbooking section–there are always tons of trinkets and I’d bet you would be able to find something with a Thanksgiving theme. If you want to do an express order, you might be able to wrangle up a few silver charms from Precious Accents for $13/each. Once you locate the perfect charm, all you need is some ribbon or string, then tie the charms to your napkins and just like that you will have an even prettier place setting than you had a few minutes before! Sometimes I think “why bother with all these little extra touches” but whenever I do something extra, it’s always the thing that people remember the most! Happy table-setting everyone! I can’t wait to eat some turkey!

As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat and please visit us on Facebook and give us a “Like” if you get a chance! We also just signed up for bloglovin and once we figure that out, we’ll give you the link, too! haha XOXO

Tinsel Town Talk with Shabby Apple’s Head Designer, Athelia Woolley!

November 18, 2011 § 3 Comments

Recently I was introduced to Shabby Apple, a line of wonderful clothes and pretty things I’m not sure how I never knew about before! Their new Tinsel Town collection is filled with wonderful dresses and accessories that are just perfect for the holidays and are all under $100, something I can really appreciate! I was lucky enough to get in touch with their head designer, Athelia Woolley, and chat about her top 5 picks for the holidays–here they are:

1. Bouvier Earrings, $13  (rhodiumized clear acrylic, lead-compliant metal. Pendant length: 1.75″)

2. Sandiegan Cuff, $35 (2 inches thick and made of brass with a silver finish)

3. Oscar Shirt, $56 (lace and satin with a scalloped hem)

4. Gabean peep-toe, $59 (animal-friendly materials: man-made upper and lining, rubber sole. 3/4″ platform, 3 1/2″ covered heel)

5. Academy Award Skirt, $62 (6 layers of tulle that cut right below the knee)

All of these pieces are staples in a woman’s wardrobe and can be taken beyond the holidays, too!

Athelia is not only passionate about her work but she is also proud of the fact that S.A. donates a portion of their proceeds to Unitus, Kiva and to Reach the Children. “All of these organizations specifically target women and children,” she says. Also, even though Althelia designs all of the dresses (which she loves to do!)  they are manufactured in Guatemala in a fair-trade environment which helps provide jobs in a developing country. So ladies, when you shop at Shabby Apple you can feel good about the fact that your shopping habit might also be doing some good out there in this big ‘ole world!

Thanks so much Athelia for giving us your top holiday picks! And as always, thanks to all of you for reading A Fresh Coat! If you get a chance, head on over to our Facebook page and give us a like! While you’re there, feel free to check out Shabby Apple’s page, too. XOXO

Sales and Savings at Your Favorite Stores!

November 10, 2011 § Leave a comment

Here at A Fresh Coat, I love a sale and I especially love a sale when a portion of the proceeds goes toward a charity or deserving group (a little something for me, a little something for you!). The new Loft Concept store in downtown DC  (600 13th St. NW) just opened this week and from 12-4 today when you shop during those hours 5% of all proceeds go toward Vital Voices, an amazing organization that empowers and supports woman locally and globally. Also, I thought I’d share the Friends & Family discount at the Loft where you can get 40% off your purchase (see below). On top of all of these awesome deals, for every $50 you spend you get a $25 savings card that is good for a future date.

You must all know I already ❤ the Loft but with these deals, how could you not?! PS–be on the lookout for a new post on the launch party for the concept store I attended last night. It was so much fun and I got a chance to speak with the design director Andrew Taylor (eek!)–no relation to Ann, btw.

What would a post on A Fresh Coat be without some sort of savings from West Elm?! Well, in addition to their Georgetown pop-up (how I WISH they would just come back to Metro Center already!) they just opened one at Towson Town Center in Towson, MD (825 Dulaney Rd). If you show them a print-out of the e-mail below, you can save 15% off one item. Thanks, Daily Candy!

Today you can finally start to use your City Cash from NY&Co! To add to the fun every item in the store is buy one get one 50% off, which is my second favorite sale they hold at the store (the first is when they have buy one pant get one free). Also, if you want to do some shopping online, today you can get 30% off your purchase (minus sweaters which are now 40% off!) and sale items. Wow, NY&Co. I am so coming to get some presents this weekend!

Banana is holding a special “After 5” event this evening where select stores (call to see if your store is participating) are offering $25 off purchases of $100 or more plus complimentary wine by Clos du Bois. To me, that spells danger but Oh the fun it should be!

Thanks so much for checking out A Fresh Coat today and happy shopping/savings! I’d love to know what you get if you go, so please feel free to e-mail me info., pictures, etc.! You can send all messages to jenatafreshcoat@gmail.com. Also, please take a minute to visit our Facebook page and give us a “Like” if you like us! Thanks again XOXO

Chocolate Thanksgiving Treats From CoCo Sala

November 9, 2011 § 1 Comment

Today when I checked my e-mail I was so excited to find these amazing chocolate Thanksgiving tabletop accessories from CoCo Sala in DC. I guess it takes a chocolate lounge to come up with the perfect, edible, chocolate tabletop decor for this special occasion! I wouldn’t recommend using the set-up with a white tablecloth but with some festive decor and a plate these could really look amazing!  I’d love to see the look on a child’s face when dinner is over and you tell them they can eat the centerpiece–priceless, I bet!

My favorite chocolate item is the turkey placecard holder–it’s a great way to keep your seating arrangements in tact as well as provide your guests with a fun, tasty take-home treat! The arsenol of chocolate includes: triple choclate pecan pie, maple CoCo. pumpkin pie, chocolate and pumpkin seed brittle bark, chocolate and caramel baby apples, and all of the treats you see in these images! Place your orders by Nov. 18th and pick up by Nov. 24th (they are closed Thanksgiving Day). I hope you enjoy! I think I’m going to order some of the turkeys for my family!

As always, thanks for reading A Fresh Coat and I hope to see you soon! If you haven’t done so already, please head over to our Facebook page and give us a “like.” You can also find us on twitter @afreshcoat. XOXO
