This Saturday I decided to check out the flea market on 9th and U to see what cool stuff I could find! I love the prospect of digging through, what sometimes happens to be a lot of trash, to find a few pieces that I hopefully can add to my list of treasures. I have to say I was slightly disappointed at the lack of “treasure” I found as most of the items for sale were electronics, not-so-hot jewelry and a TON of clothes (mostly socks and T-shirts). BUT–there were a few finds that were too good to pass up! One, was a Flip HD video recorder for $49! My boyfriend and I are traveling to Cameroon soon so we’re always looking for good deals on fun items to bring to give away while we’re there (and he had to get this)! Works perfectly and if we would have purchased it new it would have been around $180, so that was a definite score.
My favorite items I found though were some really sweet mixing bowls (see pic below)! They reminded me of some bowls from the late ’70s my mom gave me. Unfortunately, I have very little cabinet space and a strange habit of purchasing more bowls than I’ll ever have ingredients to mix so these puppies are probably still out there!
Tip: If you’re looking for a used camera, you can probably get one here pretty cheap. There was a woman who had probably a few hundred cameras at a table–everything from film to digital. Bring some batteries though so you can test them out first (most of them were dead).
If you go to the U St. Flea Market, open 9-5 every Sat and Sun, you will definitely have to dig but there are a few good finds if you’re in the neighborhood! Happy Treasure Hunting! If you have a favorite flea market in the DC area (or anywhere!) I’d love to hear about it–send me a comment or a Tweet @afreshcoat.

I’m always on the hunt for a new lip gloss and when I came across these Lip Elixirs, $6.50/each, I had to share them with you! Lately my lips have been a little dry and I don’t always want to put on something with color or smell medicine to soothe my lips. The Elixirs are a perfect fix–they are made with all-natural kukui nut oil, and aloe and cocoa butter so they keep my lips soft but they also smell like some of my favorite beverages! I tried the mimosa and mojito and the refreshing scent of citrus and mint wakes me up and keeps my lips soft all day. It doesn’t leave your lips greasy and stays on for a good while before you need to re-apply. My favorite is the mojito because a little wiff of mint wakes me up in the morning, too. These are great for everyday use but they would also make cute favors at a shower or a girls night in (Total Sidebar: at a baby shower I saw martini glasses filled with cocktail-flavored jelly beans which I thought was a wonderful idea…and these are another way to bring cocktails in without actually having alcohol at the party!)
So, back to the lips! If you’re in DC you can find them at these shops:
Green & Blue
1350 Connecticut Ave. NW
Washington DC 20036
West of SoHo
2613 P Street NW
Washington D.C. 20007
Hope you like these as much as I do! Let me know what you think–leave a comment and tell me about your favorite lip gloss!

I never thought I would get so excited about a casserole carrier. First, who knew they even existed? I’ve seen (and purchased) dishes/pans that come with a carrier lid but I’d never thought of something like this. What a great way to arrive at your next pot luck or work lunch in style!
The carriers are $45/each and designed by Vonny Faucheux of Vonny, based in LA. They are insulated and have a pocket to put serving utensils in-genius! There are four styles to choose from in Orange Daiquiri, Black & White Bohemian, Calliope (green, yellow and brown circles), and Carnival (red and white sunbursts). If there’s one thing living in cities has taught me, it’s that heels aren’t good for us walkers! They look amazing, yes, but by the end of the day (or night) my feet just don’t want to move anymore. Smushed toes, sore soles and nails popping through the end of my shoes from pounding all of that concrete–I had enough! I was SO overjoyed when these roll-up flats hit the streets (hehe..pun so intended!).
What I like most about the Funk-tional Footwear brand is that they come in a zippered pouch (a little larger than a wallet) and the shoes fold in half flat (don’t worry, they have soles so it doesn’t hurt if you step on a stone). The pouch unfolds and turns inside-out into a tote so you can throw your heels in them and pop on your flats when you’re ready for some relief! The pouches fit in most purses so you can take them with you day or night. I have a black and a gold pair and love them both!
So, what’s this *giveaway* you ask? Well, your very own pair of course! Since Valentine’s Day is coming up I thought we should all take a minute to love our feet and give them a break from heels! Thanks to the wonderful ladies of Funk-tional Footwear, we’ve partnered up to offer YOU a free pair! To enter, leave a comment with your shoe size and subscribe to my blog! One winner (US only) will be chosen at random on Valentine’s Day and will receive an e-mail notification. So, take a minute to comment and tell your friends! For more info. and to purchase, click here.
Thanks so much for reading and GOOD LUCK! ❤

My Valentine’s Day Find #2 is this amazing Olive Wood Paperweight from Ten Thousand Villages, $16 (click here for more info). Palestinian artists make these heavy hearts from pruned branches so they don’t cut down any trees to create them! The pattern on the wood grain is so pretty and I can just picture this in combination with an all-white desk and accessories! I love the way natural, light wood looks against a white backdrop. Ahh…love is in the air!

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and it’s time to show that special someone in your life how much you care! OK, we all know this is a made-up holiday but it’s a fun one and I say there’s nothing wrong with letting the people you love in your life know all about it–especially if it involves flowers, chocolate or something eco-friendly!
One of my most recent finds is from Brazilian designer Carlos Sobral. Everything crafted in Sobral’s studio in Rio de Janeiro is made from recycled and natural materials and the best part—everything is so bright and bold! The colors just seem to bring these vases, frames and planting pots to life.
The Encapsu frame, below, is a perfect fit for Valentine’s Day! Put in your favorite picture of you and your lov-ah (or best friend, etc.) and you have a heart-felt present (excuse the pun)! Check out the rest of this fabulous collection at sobralusa.com.
